New Trucking Companies by State
Since January 2024, 363,087 new motor carriers have registered with the FMCSA and appeared in the federal Company Census. The map below shows where they are based. “New” means a carrier’s USDOT registration was created on or after 2024-01-01 — the earliest public signal that a trucking company exists. It is the front door to operating authority, not an authority grant itself.
The headline numbers
New-carrier registration is concentrated in the same large states that dominate the active fleet — but the long tail spreads across every state, a steady stream of new entrants the federal register absorbs each month.
New trucking companies across the country
Each state is shaded by the number of carriers registered since 2024-01-01, from light (fewer) to dark (more) — darker states are the bigger entry hubs. The smallest Northeast states and DC are labeled in the margin so their counts stay readable.

Entries and exits: two sides of the same churn
New registrations are only half the story. Because HaulReport keeps a daily history of the FMCSA data, we track the carriers leaving too. Frequently asked questions
- How many new trucking companies have registered recently?
- Since January 1, 2024, 363,087 motor carriers have been added to the FMCSA Company Census. "New" here means the carrier's USDOT registration (its census add date) falls on or after that date. A census registration is the front door to interstate operating authority, but is not itself an operating-authority grant.
- Which state has the most new trucking companies?
- Texas leads with 41,392 carriers registered since January 2024, followed by California (40,370) and Florida (31,337). Those three states alone account for about 31% of all new registrations — they are also the largest trucking states overall.
- Is a new FMCSA registration the same as a new operating authority?
- No. A new census entry means a carrier obtained a USDOT number. Many will go on to apply for interstate operating authority (an MC number) and file insurance, but some operate intrastate or as private/exempt carriers and never need authority. We count registrations, which is the broadest and earliest public signal of a new carrier.
- Where does this data come from?
- The public FMCSA Company Census (dataset az4n-8mr2), filtered to active carriers with a census add date on or after 2024-01-01 and grouped by the carrier's registered physical-address state. It is refreshed automatically as the federal data updates.
