SAFER Web Explained — and a Free Carrier Lookup
SAFER Web (SAFERweb) is the FMCSA's free public system for looking up a motor carrier's company snapshot — USDOT number, operating-authority status, fleet size, and basic safety data. HaulReport is an independent lookup built on the same public FMCSA records, with a more readable profile and the one thing SAFER's snapshot can't give you: a daily history of what changed.

What SAFER Web shows
SAFER's company snapshot is the standard first stop for confirming a carrier exists and is registered. It typically shows the carrier's USDOT number, legal and DBA name, physical address, operating status, operation classification, fleet size (power units and drivers), and high-level inspection and crash totals. It is authoritative and free — but it shows the record as it stands today, with no view of how it got there.
What HaulReport adds
- A readable profile. The same public fields, laid out for humans, with clearly-labeled BASIC percentile estimates (independent reconstructions, not official scores).
- A change history. We compare the FMCSA record every day and keep the differences, so you can see new registrations, authority revocations & reinstatements, insurance filing activity, and legal-name & DBA changes — none of which a current-state snapshot can show.
- Vetting context. Our carrier-vetting guide and chameleon-carrier guide turn those signals into a practical due-diligence workflow.

SAFER Web FAQ
What is SAFER Web?
SAFER (Safety and Fitness Electronic Records), often called SAFER Web or SAFERweb, is the FMCSA's public system for looking up a motor carrier's company snapshot: USDOT number, operating authority status, fleet size, and basic safety information. It is run by the U.S. government and is free to use.
Is HaulReport the same as SAFER?
No. HaulReport is an independent directory and is not affiliated with the FMCSA, SAFER, or the U.S. DOT. We build on the same public FMCSA datasets but add a more readable layout, clearly-labeled percentile estimates, and a daily change history that SAFER's current-state snapshot does not provide.
Is looking up a carrier free?
Yes. Both SAFER and HaulReport are free to search. HaulReport is built entirely on public FMCSA data; you can look up any published carrier by USDOT number or company name at no cost.
What can I see that SAFER doesn't show?
SAFER shows a carrier's status today. HaulReport keeps an append-only daily history of the public record, so we can also show what changed: new registrations, authority revocations and reinstatements, insurance filing activity, and legal-name or DBA changes over time.
