The Largest Truck Insurance Companies

Which insurers actually cover America’s trucking companies? Using the public FMCSA insurance register, this leaderboard ranks insurers by the number of active liability (BIPD) filings on record — a window into market share that single-carrier lookup tools can’t show. Great West Casualty Co. leads with 38,460 active filings.

How to read this. Each ranking is a count of active liability filings on the public record, a proxy for how many carriers an insurer covers — not premium dollars, policies in force, or a quality rating. Insurers are listed exactly as named on their filings; large insurers underwrite through several licensed entities, so the market is more concentrated than the entity list alone suggests. This is a point-in-time snapshot (the FMCSA register froze around end-2025 during the MOTUS migration), and it is not an endorsement or recommendation.

Why you can’t find this elsewhere

SAFER and other lookup tools show one carrier’s insurer at a time. Because HaulReport aggregates the entire public insurance register, we can answer the market-level question — which insurers cover the most trucking companies? A few important caveats keep this honest: filing share is not the same as premium market share; some carriers (especially cross-border ones) file coverage differently or not at all; and corporate families underwrite through multiple named entities, so a parent group’s true footprint is larger than any one row. For the flip side — carriers with no liability amount on file — see carrier insurance statistics and carriers without insurance on file by state.

Frequently asked questions

What is the largest truck insurance company in the United States?
By active primary-liability (BIPD) filings on the public FMCSA register, Great West Casualty Co. carries the most — 38,460 filings, about 10.4% of the 371,447 active liability filings on record. This measures filing share on the public register, not premium volume or financial-strength ratings, and large insurers also underwrite through several entities, so the true market is more concentrated than any single name shows.
How is this truck-insurer ranking calculated?
HaulReport counts active primary-liability (BIPD) insurance filings on the public FMCSA insurance roster (dataset qh9u-swkp) and groups them by the insurer named on each filing. "Active" means the filing carries no cancellation date. Each filing reflects a carrier's liability coverage placed by that insurer, so the count is a proxy for how many trucking companies an insurer covers — not dollars of premium.
Does this rank insurers by quality or price?
No. This is a neutral count of filings on the public record. It is not a recommendation, a quality or financial-strength rating, or a measure of price. Insurers appear exactly as named on their FMCSA filings; HaulReport is not affiliated with any of them.
How current is this data?
It is a point-in-time snapshot of the public FMCSA insurance register. The FMCSA registration data froze around the end of 2025 during the agency's MOTUS system migration, so these figures map the market as of that record rather than a live daily feed. They are aggregated from public records compiled 2026-06-23.

Data: public FMCSA insurance register (dataset qh9u-swkp), compiled 2026-06-23; 371,447 active primary-liability filings analyzed. Filing counts as recorded in the public register — a proxy for market share, not premium volume, policies in force, financial-strength ratings, or an endorsement, and not an official FMCSA statistic. The register reflects FMCSA data as of its end-2025 freeze. See methodology and data sources.
